CHAPTER FIFTEEN

His shoulders bowed as if carrying a heavy burden.

I had to stop myself from rushing over to help him carry it. He probably wouldn’t appreciate the support, and Saphira would lose her mind. Most importantly, it wasn’t my place…even if I wanted it to be.

“Any day now,” Saphira sniped as she strolled toward the kitchen and grabbed a handful of bacon. “Unless this is your way of trying to get out of telling us something.”

If she would just stop and watch with an open mind, she would see that whatever he had to say was difficult for him. I wanted to chastise her, but that would only delay us in getting answers.

She popped a piece of bacon into her mouth, and for the life of me, I didn’t understand how she could eat at a time like this.

“Just…give me a minute to gather my thoughts,” he rasped and crossed his arms.

I smiled sadly at him. “Take your time. We’re not going anywhere.”

“We could’ve,” Saphira grumbled. “But you made it clear that you want to stay here, and I stupidly went along.” She took another bite of bacon. “At least I’m getting to eat. That’s a silver lining.”

My stomach grumbled, and my mouth watered. I’d questioned her for eating at a time like this, and now I wanted to do the same thing. Eating would be better than scolding her…or that was my justification.

I hurried over and grabbed a piece of bacon. When I took a bite, the taste exploded on my tongue. It was better than it had been when I was human, the salt and grease like an orgasm in my mouth.

Saphira and I chowed down, waiting for Thorn to start.

After what felt like hours, he finally spoke. “A young, beautiful nanny took the six-year-old boy in her charge for an early morning walk.” His tone softened, and a faint smile spread across his face. “She told him he didn’t have time for breakfast, or they might miss the elk in the area.”

Warmth exploded in my heart. I loved watching the elk in the mornings or late evenings. Mom would take me with her on hikes in the woods, and I would go begrudgingly. Even though I loved painting nature, I wasn’t fond of actually being out in it. But for the longest time, I was the only person she had to go hiking with. To make her happy, I’d swallow my complaints because she’d sacrificed so much for me. The few times we’d stumbled upon the elk in the woods had been magical, making the miserable experience more than worth it.

“You see, the boy loved seeing the elk and the deer in nature. Whenever it happened, it was the highlight of his day, so he followed his nanny dutifully.” He leaned his back against the wall without missing a beat in the story. “They took in the cool morning, enjoying the breeze on their warm skin. That was when they heard a rustling in the woods nearby.”

He licked his lips as the corners of his mouth dipped.
